This article is a review of the process of psychic development from early to middle adolescence as depicted in the Harry Potter series by the English writer J. K. Rowling. The materials are the four latest volumes of the series, i.e., Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, which include the adolescent years from age 13 to 16 of main character, Harry Potter. Harry is a chronically abused orphan boy who is a wizard by birth but is forced to live with his cold-hearted aunt. The novel is the story of Harry¡¯s life and adventures after he is invited to study at Hogwarts Magic School. The author reviewed Harry¡¯s adolescent development in the aspect of 1) Development of innate drives, 2) Development of object relations and the second separation?individuation, and 3) Narcissism, family romance fantasy, and identity formation. The novel provides ample symbols and materials for explaining the development of aggressive and sexual drives, the process of object- and self-constancy, and the various inner fantasies of an abused but actively developing adolescent boy, as well as a healthy and insightful adult figure who provides therapeutic moments for a tumultuous adolescent while he is struggling through his mourning process and identity issues.
